Upgrade Your PC To Windows 7 In Style

We’ll be honest. Vista came along and brought us no convincing arguments whatsoever to upgrade our consistently stable workhorse XP PCs at our offices here on Unplggd. Now, after giving their beta a shot (and being quite impressed that we were able to run it just fine off an old Pentium III collecting dust in our closet), we feel like our 8-year old XP deserves a befitting upgrade.

This chart pretty much simplifies the upgrade process in case you need it. We like the Professional edition since it allows you to emulate non-supported Windows 7 applications and run them like they’re still in XP. Otherwise, sticking with the Home Premium edition would be your best bet. Officially announced a few days ago, Vista and XP users will need to pony up $119.99, $199.99, or $219.99 on October 22 to score their Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate upgrade. Full retail will run you $199.99, $299.99, or $319.99.
The good news? Amazon (as well as numerous retailers around the country including Best Buy, Costco, Fry’s Electronics, Office Depot, Office Max, Sam’s Club, Staples, Tiger Direct, Walmart, and more) is allowing you to preorder the upgrade bundle for cheap. So, given supplies haven’t dried out yet, you can grab the Home Premium Upgrade and Professional Upgrade packages right now for $49.99 and $99.99 though July 11th. It’s the cheapest OS upgrade we’ve ever seen and has our thumbs up of approval. So, what are you waiting for?

The Villa, The Netherlands, by Fat Architecture

The Villa is a community building which sits at the heart of the Heerlijkheid park designed by Fat in the town of Hoogvliet in the Netherlands. The building contains a multi-use hall, offices, and a café.

Its design is intended to create a 21st century civic architecture for a suburban new town. It is a decorated shed, using timber rain screen cladding to create an architecture of communication which evokes Hoogvliet’s industrial past, whilst the references to elements of nature in the entrance and in some of the “cut-out” features of the façade, recall the bucolic ideas on which the design of the New Town was originally based. Inside the shed like quality of the building is emphasized by the painting pink of the structure. From the inside, views to the park and surrounding landscape are framed by the delicate intricacies of the external envelope.

Sharp Introduces Dimming LED Bulb Controlled via Remote

We’ve replaced almost all our light bulbs with eco-friendly compact fluorescents, but there are still some lamps we still use energy hogging incandescents with — such as the light in our office. There’s just something about the pairing of CFLs and my LCD monitor that makes our eyes want to bleed. Both provide relatively harsh lighting, and since CFLs can’t really be adjusted we’ve let this one lamp slip. We may change our tune as soon as Sharp releases its LEDs. The bulbs come with a remote control which let you scroll through seven different intensities of white. It’s similar to a dimmer… As with most cool things, they’ll be in Japan first. Hopefully they’ll cross the Pacific soon!
ROCOfurniture

The ROCO furniture represents the Ring Of COmmunication, as it can be used as a meeting point in an office or as a multifunctional living area at home. Its dimensions are 220X200X85 cm (external radius is 110 cm) and it is mainly made of plastic, so it can be easily lifted, rolled and pass through almost every door. In the middle of the table is integrated a 36″ touch screen, which can operate as a high-efficient computer or a classic TV.
Phantom Keystroker V2 Is Not Really Discrete

The Phantom Keystroker is the ideal instrument for practical jokes, possibly at the office. Once attached to a USB port, the Keystroker will send random mouse and keyboard commands (like CAPS and more…) and random text. It is somewhat configurable with three switches, and you can even set a timer to activate it.
The Phantom Keystroker is not really discrete and would likely work better on desktop machines , but an ultimate version should be pluggable in an internal USB port, directly on the motherboard.

A Nesting Office Set-Up

First there was One Less Desk, now there’s One Less Office! The people who designed nesting steel desks, have now come up with a solution for people who have more than just a computer, monitor, keyboard and mouse. The One Less Office comprises of the same two nesting tables that can hold your basic workstation equipment, along with a lower deck that can hold a printer, desktop tower, modems, you name it, and then even one more cube that acts as a filing cabinet. Everything fits together like an old school nesting doll so you can minimize your home office footprint when you’re not working.
The desk pair starts at $679, the extra stand costs $319 and starts shipping in July, and the filing cabinets costs $199 and also starts shipping in July. Everything is available in six powder-coated colors.
