Wendell Castle, known for his fixation with the use of coloured plastics, designed these amazing lamps in the late 1960s. This was especially outlandish because at the time, and to some degree even today, plastic was not synonymous with high-end furniture design and luxury pieces. The line has recently been put back into limited production for the first time in 40 years by R 20^th Century. The amazing thing is that the lamps look just as stunning and cutting edge today as they did when they were originally created. In a way the lamps show us that the truly inspired design is timeless. We think these lamps are absolutely awesome, with hints of pop art and surrealism seen throughout.

Counting on the popularity of the LivingColors lamp, Philips has announced the second generation of the trendy lamp to set the mood in contemporary spaces. Capable of producing 16 million colors through a combination of seven LEDs, the latest version of the LivingColors lamp will illuminate with 50 percent more intensity. Controlled by a touch-sensitive remote, the new LivingColors lamp comes in an opaque version with a metal stand, allowing a more concentrated light beam in comparison to its predecessor. Priced between £100 and £180, the lamp’s options include a choice between a standing lamp, a wall lamp and two ceiling lamps according to the needs and likings of the user.

Employing magnetism technology, the UFO Lamp from Baita Design is an unconventional lighting that as its name suggest levitates in the air to illuminate your living place. Encasing a lens made in ABS plastic, bulb and magnets in an aluminum dome, the UFO Lamp works in tandem with a stainless steel base that also houses magnets and electronics. Featuring foot controlled buttons, including power, up, down and polarity inversion, the lamp floats above the magnetic base to set the mood with its magnetizing elucidation.

Conceived by Kenny Hopper, the “Envelope Lamp” is designed to deliver a range of light intensity based on the movement of three rotating and overlapping translucent shades. The central fixture of the lamp features a translucent plastic polymer to offer diffuse lighting for different interior space sizes. Made of stained glass, a steel frame and brushed aluminum (internal mounting), the lamp measures 28” in height, 27” in diameter and comes integrated with a 72” cord.

The creative bunch of people at Liquidesign have come up with the Bagalight which is made out of card and paper. This freestanding equipment is able to offer an individual lighting effect that not only looks cute but is functional as well. You can also pick one up in an anglepoise lamp design if you want to. The Bagalight will retail for £29.99, and best of all is, it won’t have too much of a negative impact on the environment as compared to a standard issue lamp.

A very elegantly designed LED lamp by Tunto which has won the international Red Dot Design 2009 Award for this brilliant lamp that operates by touch and has no visible switches and nicely combines digital technology with natural wood. The lamp was designed by Mikko Krakkainen, and it is available to pre-order from the FinnishDesignShop for 495 Euros, about $650.
