From @Sebastian_Rohr, a kinetic sculpture & light made of rice paper, “although fragile, Rice paper will last 1000 years (barring any fire), is immune to damp and moths, so weirdly the rice paper will outlast the mild steel that hold the work together. The light is fluorescent, so the lamp is very energy efficient.”

Turn on the light and watch it knit a lampshade. Nadine Sterk’s Sleeping Beauty does not sleep on the job.

Conceived by Kenny Hopper, the “Envelope Lamp” is designed to deliver a range of light intensity based on the movement of three rotating and overlapping translucent shades. The central fixture of the lamp features a translucent plastic polymer to offer diffuse lighting for different interior space sizes. Made of stained glass, a steel frame and brushed aluminum (internal mounting), the lamp measures 28” in height, 27” in diameter and comes integrated with a 72” cord.

Trees grow in Kazumi Abe’s forest to help out as storage elements. They act as trunks to the Forest Light where they come in handy for small items such as jewellery, while the base is a good spot to park other everyday accessories. Room dividers do double duty as tidy yet decorative storage when Delilab‘s Kentaro Kudo is behind the design. Hangers are created by slicing out forms from the wall itself, and slots are turned into pockets. The divider, which takes up less space than a shelving unit, offers the user the chance to hang up a favorite piece of clothing, stash papers and accessories and say it with flowers.

Pocket Light by Harc Lee.

Korean based Designer DMO has created a series of lights within a cool almost 2D lighting piece. The LED lights are housed within the structure itself giving off a pleasant and clean glow. Minimalistic in it’s very nature, their new lines of products were showcased at 100% Design last month.

White, environmentally sound and cool to the touch OLED lights could very well be the future of mundane office environment lighting, but for now they’re just meant to be man handled by four geeks at a table.

Still, Office Space comparisons aside, for me the simple dimming of the four-square OLED, and the fact that these lights won’t rape and pillage the environment like those nasty mercury-containing fluorescents we see everywhere today, were cool enough to warrant the wait.

Unfortunately, just like OLED HDTV screens, these lights are starting small and expensive (the prototype shown here is just 24-inches). Hopefully the $2 million Department of Energy grant awarded to manufacturer UDC in July 2008 (it’s their prototype) will hasten the process, if only slightly.
