NINO – flexible office system

NINO is a dynamic and flexible office system developed during a 2 year research.

NINO proposes a new approach to the workstation which aims to enable chance encounters, communication and possibly collaborations.

In depth practice-based research highlighted the need for tools and conditions capable of supporting mobile, flexible and social dynamics within the work environment.

Since the digital revolution the work environment has gone through big changes: new work dynamics and new workers typologies have appeared. Consequently the products we use at work on a daily basis have become more mobile and flexible. But what about our workstations? Why have they remained static and rigid?

Nowadays most workers spend 60% of their working day away from the desk and all the tools we daily use at work (laptops, mobile phone, cloud computing etc) do not require anymore static and fixed positions. But companies still allocate a huge expense to buy and install workstations that are occupied only a few hours per day. NINO office system introduces a new mobile and multifunctional solution which allows companies to provide fewer workstations used as working hubs in a more suitable way for the contemporary worker.

The project provides a furniture system that is as flexible, dynamic and social as the products we daily use at work and takes over the outdated work environment structure imposed by rigid and static workstations.

NINO is composed of a stand and a set of satellite objects which the user can assemble as required.

NINO moves, NINO morphs. NINO does not prescribe ergonomic positions but gives to the user a chance to discover.

NINO does not belong to anyone. Every worker is free to use the system by placing the tools he needs, encouraging this way new encounters.

NINO can be easily set up to create a formal, informal, social or private scenario according to the user’s needs.

Office Desk Design – Converted Car

Office furniture can sometimes be bland and boring, especially the humble office desk. But despite this the office desk is a very important, often integral, part of a working person’s life – after all the majority of your time is spent on it. This cool desk converted from a mini car allows for the expression of individual style, class and creativity. If you’re willing to spend circa $5000 USD this desk could be yours, though it clearly needs a particular type of office space as it may be too “progressive” for some institutions!

Office Chair + Workout Station

I’m sure many of us will appreciate how difficult sitting in an office chair all day can be, not only psychologically but also from a fitness perspective.  The Fit@Work fitness chair concept aims to allow people to get a workout right from their office desk, in an attempt to increase fitness and decrease some of the back and neck problems which sitting at a desk all day can cause.  The ergonomically designed chair is a fully functioning stationary fitness center in itself which allows users to perform a number of gym-like exercises, while also allowing them to sit the day away in comfort and style. The question is, do you really want to be sweaty at work? Doesn’t seem too practical if you ask me!

Elegant Office Design – The Volna Office Desk

The Volna office desk by Nüvist is possibly one of the most beautiful pieces of office furniture I’ve seen for a while. The striking design is both elegant and stylish, however I wonder how functional it would be as one’s daily  desk for work. Nevertheless this is definitely one office desk that I’d want!

It was very important to  create soft and serene experience in the tangible and the visual sense for this type of table design. The new technologies  and the modern materials were the main ingredients for the creation and these provide us to design an unbroken continious form. In this way, Volna Table has met both the functionality and a unique elegance look and it has been shaped  like a wave and features an incessant flow.

Gym Class Office Desk

It’s rare to see a clean gym floor ridden of sneaker marks, but the Origin Workstation by Mirato avoids these pesky streaks. This is because the design firm Mirato constructed this office desk with a twist to bring back the days of the gym class.

The office desk is made from a 100% reclaimed gym floor. The floors are even given a polished look, after receiving a ton of abuse from sneakers running scraping the surface daily, for that authentic feel. At 4x 10 this is a great size that can easily fit four people without feeling crowded. Mirato also promises that a wiring containment can be configured into the table, which means tangled cables will not be an issue for users of the Origin Workstation.

Flexible Sit Stand Desk

humanscale-4

This unique and creative desk is known as the Humanscale Float Sit-Stand Height-Adjustable Table. Quite a mouthful I know, but this desk is extremely innovative and we love it. It consists of two telescopic legs which, thanks to a clever counter balance system, allow the user to adjust the height by simply pressing a lever and applying a tiny bit of pressure. Unlike most other sit-stand desks, the table-top is interchangeable and can accommodate worktops ranging from 42″ to 72″ in length. Though the desk is slightly aesthetically bland, the practicality of it more than makes up for this if you ask me.

Office Furniture – Mad Men Style

The Mad Men sets are meticulously crafted with original and replica furniture from the 1960s and the mid-century modern aesthetic captures the structure and ethos of the era’s workplace, emphasizing hierarchy, separation of responsibilities and the influence of gender roles.

Don Drapers Office

Obviously the contemporary office has changed dramatically in the last 50 years or so, most notably in the tech industry. Work styles are more fluid, interactive, and mobile and office design has evolved to meet these trends.

So Knoll, a company whose furniture is all over the Mad Men set, asked six industrial designers to use its research on the way people work, and create new furnishings that would make our lives better, more collaborative and more modern. Essentially asking, “what would Don Draper’s workspace look like if he were an exec at a tech start-up?”

The key to the today’s office space is remix potential, and Knoll’s got it covered. Their Antennae line of office furniture, for example, is green, ergonomically correct and designed to facilitate colleague collaboration.

At eBay the workspaces are populated with modular, flexible furniture with a mix and match vibe. The tables are bench-style and the office is dotted with private meeting spaces and open spaces for cooperation. Draper, still likely sitting in a classic tulip chair, would be at home with the sleek modern aesthetic but would also be able to work as a tech guru would—in a flexible, open plan space, ready to brainstorm with his buddies about their next bold move.

Desks, tables, screens and storage of Knoll’s new Antennae line combine and recombine in a seemingly infinite number of ways for open plan environments, private offices and meeting spaces. Counter height tables and adjustable, seated-to-standing height desks facilitate a range of work postures. You can work at a long table with your colleagues and chat about an idea or share a cat video and then hide behind your private screen to focus and get some work done.

When in 50 years our grandchildren are making TV shows about the dramas of Silicon Valley, they’ll be referring to these designs to replicate the workplace vibe of the 2010s. Maybe by then the story of The Social Network will be turned into a kitschy comedy about the geeks of the “digital revolution.”
